Shishi and Peonies, Kyo-Kinko

Two menuki in solid gold, each a shishi among peonies. The blossoms open in layers and take up half of each piece. The lions push their heads out from among them, manes curling. The paper calls these menuki katachi-bori, carved in the round, and the subject botan shishi, lion and peony.
The pairing is old. Japan Search, the portal of the National Diet Library, notes that the lion with peonies appears from the Kamakura period and was widely loved in the Muromachi period. It also notes that in carved lacquer of that time the peony is often larger than the lion. On these menuki the flowers hold their own as well.
The NBTHK attributes the pair to Kyo-kinko, the metalworkers of the capital, and names no maker.
