Two Horses, Yanagawa Naomitsu

The pair of gold menuki by Yanagawa Naomitsu on deep red velvet, two horses at full gallop running toward each other.

Two gold menuki by Yanagawa Naomitsu, each a single horse at full gallop. One turns its head back over its shoulder, its mane heavy and full. The other runs with its head up and forward, mane and tail flying. The bodies are left smooth and polished. The detail is kept for the manes, the tails and the hooves. There is no rider, no rein and no ground beneath them.

The menuki are signed by Yanagawa Naomitsu, of the Yanagawa school of Edo. The Haynes Index places him around 1760. The NBTHK’s journal calls Yanagawa Naomasa the senior student of Yokoya Somin and names the Ishiguro among the many lines that later grew from his school.
